Karimnagar

District town in northern Telangana. A pillar here of January 1171 records, in Telugu verse, the foundations of Gangadhara, minister of the Kakatiya chiefs Prola II and Rudradeva.

The Gangadhara pillar

A stone pillar stood in the compound of the Talukdar’s bungalow at Karimnagar.1 It carries a Telugu inscription dated in January 1171, in the reign of the Kakatiya Rudradeva.1 It was published in 1940 as No. 56 of P. Sreenivasachar’s Corpus of Inscriptions in the Telingana Districts.1

In the inscription Gangadhara, a Brahmin whose family came from the Vengi country, lists what he founded with the favour of the kings Prola and Rudra.23 His foundations were an agrahara (village for Brahmins), temples, tanks and gardens, among them temples at Anumakonda.23 See the Karimnagar inscription of Gangadhara.
