Mellacheruvu

Village in the old Huzurnagar taluk. Its Svayambhudeva temple has a Telugu inscription of January 1312, in Prataparudra's reign. It records an endowment by the Velamas and people of the village under a nayamkara holder (a chief holding land for military service).

The temple inscription

Mellacheruvu lay in the Huzurnagar taluk of the old Nalgonda district. A stone slab in its Svayambhudeva temple carries a Telugu inscription of 1312, of the reign of the Kakatiya king Prataparudra.1 P. Sreenivasachar published it in 1940 as No. 26 of his Corpus of Inscriptions in the Telingana Districts.1

The inscription records a gift by the Velamas and all the people of the village, on the authority of the holder of a nayamkara (land held for military service).21 They gave the god land and fixed levies on grain and on merchants, weavers and shepherds.21 See the Mellacheruvu inscription.
