Bothpur

Village in the Mahbubnagar district, the Budhapura of the inscriptions. The Kakatiya general Malyala Gunda and his wife Kuppambika held court here. They left three inscriptions of 1259, 1272 and 1277 recording tanks, temples and gifts to learned Brahmins.

The Malyala court

Bothpur lay in the Mahbubnagar taluk and district. P. Sreenivasachar identified it with Budhapura, where the Kakatiya general Malyala Gunda kept a small court of his own.1 Three inscriptions of the family were found there.23 Two are on black stone pillars in the courtyard of the mosque, and one is on a slab in the wall of the Ishvara or Lingappa temple.23 In 1259 and 1272 Gunda built tanks near Budhapuri: the Bacha-samudra named after his mother, the Kuppa-samudra named after his wife and the Ganapa-samudra named after his master Ganapatideva. He also built temples on their banks.3

In 1277 his widow Kuppambika, daughter of Buddhaya of the Gona family, built a Shaiva temple in his name.2 The verses were composed by the scholar Ishvara-suri.3

P. V. Parabrahma Sastry noted that it is not known how this branch of the Malyala family came to Bothpur.4 Its ancestral home was at Kondaparti near Warangal.4 See the Bothpur tank inscription of Malyala Gunda.
