Sangareddy
Town north-west of Hyderabad, called Sangareddipet in the Imperial Gazetteer of 1909, which was the headquarters of Medak district in the Nizam's Dominions. It had the district offices, a court and a jail, and the state stud farm at Rajampet nearby; the trading town of Sadasivpet lay ten miles to the west.
Sangareddy is a town north-west of Hyderabad. Under the Nizams it was the headquarters of Medak district, although the district took its name from the hill town of Medak.1 The Imperial Gazetteer of India volume on Hyderabad (1909) calls it Sangareddipet.2
The district headquarters
The gazetteer places the town 34 miles north-west of Hyderabad city.2 It was 14 miles north of Shankarpalli station on the Nizam’s State Railway.2 In 1901 the town had 4,809 people.2 It held the offices of the First and Third Talukdars (the district officer and his assistant), the Irrigation Engineer and the Police Superintendent.2 It also had a district civil court, a district jail, a dispensary and two schools.2
The district civil judge, called the Nazim-i-Diwani, sat at Sangareddy.3 The jail kept only prisoners with short sentences.4 Those with longer terms went to the Central Jail at Nizamabad.4 Sangareddy was also the only municipality in the district.4
Stud farm and trade
Two miles west of the town lay the state stud farm at Rajampet.2 The gazetteer says stallions were kept there to improve local horses.5 It adds that farmers were slow to use them.5 In the 1930s Sangareddy had a government experimental farm and garden.6
The trading town of Sadasivpet (then Sadaseopet) lay ten miles to the west.2 The gazetteer calls it a large market with a flourishing trade.2 Goods came to it by road from Shankarpalli station.7 A metalled road of 14 miles joined Shankarpalli to Sangareddy.7
