Chevuru

Village in the old Kaikalur taluk of Kistna (Krishna) district, near Vadali and Singarayapalem, west of the Kolleru lake. A copper-plate grant of the Eastern Chalukya king Amma I was dug up here about 1928, and B. Ch. Chhabra published it. The grant concerns the nearby village of Unikili.

B. Ch. Chhabra visited Chevuru in November 1938, and he placed the village in the Kaikalur taluk of Krishna (then Kistna) district.1 He reached it from the neighbouring village of Singarayapalem.1 The revenue inspector of the Vadali firka (revenue circle) helped him.1 He noted that the Kaikalur taluk had once been part of the Gudivada taluk, so Chevuru and the villages around it had formerly lain in Gudivada.2

The copper plates

About ten years before Chhabra’s visit, a peasant of Chevuru, Pulovarapa Ankayya, son of Venkata Reddi, was digging old earth for manure from the debris of a ruined mud house.1 His spade turned up a set of three copper plates.1 He kept them at home, unnoticed, until Chhabra heard of them and borrowed them for publication.1

They proved to be a grant of the Eastern Chalukya king Amma I (918–925 in Fleet’s chronology).34 It made the warrior Vemaraja headman of the village of Umikili in the Gudravara district.34

Chhabra identified Umikili with Unikili, and its boundary village Dadrupaka with Rudrapaka, both in the Kaikalur taluk.2 He did not say how far they lay from Chevuru.2 See the Chevuru plates of Amma I.
