Gudur (Jangaon)
Village in the old Jangaon taluk. A pillar here carries Telugu verses telling how the Viriyala chief Erra and the lady Kamasani restored the young Kakatiya chief Beta. Beside them are Kannada records of the Viriyala chief Malla and of the Chalukya prince Someshvara (1124).
The Viriyala pillar
In 1940 Gudur lay in the Jangaon taluk of the Nalgonda district. A stone pillar stands in a street near the village headman’s house and carries several inscriptions.1 One is a Telugu poem in praise of the Viriyala chief Erra. It tells how he set up the boy Bottu Beta in the Koravi country.12 It also tells how, for the sake of the lady Kamasani, he restored the young Kakati lord Beta.12
Another inscription, in Kannada, records that Malla of the Viriyala family built a Shiva temple called Malleshvara at Gumudur.2 He also built a tank and a large well there.2 A Kannada inscription at Gudur of 24 December 1124 records a gift of a village to the god Malleshvara of Gumudur.3 The Western Chalukya prince Someshvara made this gift.3 See the Gudur pillar inscriptions of the Viriyala family.
