Matedu

Village on the Warangal–Khammam road with twin Shiva and Vishnu temples. Pillar inscriptions of 1120 there record temples built by Malle-nayaka, a soldier of Prola II. A record of 1310 records a levy given by the villagers in Prataparudra's reign.

The temples

Matedu lies about 40 miles from Warangal on the road to Khammam, in the former Mahbubabad taluk.1 A short way from the road, two temples stand side by side in one enclosure, one for Shiva and one for Vishnu.12

Telugu inscriptions on a stone pillar there record the work of Malle-nayaka of the Vemabola family.342 He was a soldier in the service of the Kakatiya Prola II.342 In 1120 he built temples and gave them land at Mallasamudram.342 A verse account of his family on the same pillar says that his father Reva fought for the Kakatiyas.342 See the Matedu inscription.

The record of 1310

A Telugu inscription on a slab in the Gopalasvami temple at Matedu is dated Saka 1232 (1310; Saka is an Indian way of counting years), in the reign of Prataparudra.5 It records a gift to the temple by all the eighteen prajas (communities) of the village.56 They gave a levy of five visas on every mada (a coin) of their siddhaya tax.56

P. V. Parabrahma Sastry used it as evidence that siddhaya was by then a money levy on land. He also noted that it names the town body (nagaramu) alongside the other corporate groups that made the gift.78
