Khammam

Town in Telangana. In 1909 it was the head-quarters of the Khammamett taluk of the Warangal district of Hyderabad State, and the district's chief trading place after Mathwada near Warangal. In 1847 the future minister Salar Jang I, aged nineteen, began his career as talukdar (revenue officer) of the district.

Khammam (Khammamett) was a taluk town of the Warangal district in the dominions of the Asaf Jahi Nizams. The Imperial Gazetteer of 1909 describes the Khammamett taluk as the southern taluk of the district.1 It had an area of 990 square miles and 154,540 people in 1901.1 The gazetteer names “Mathwada near Warangal” as the district’s most important centre of trade, “and next to it the village of Khammamett”.2

Salar Jang I

Campbell’s Glimpses of the Nizam’s Dominions (1898) says that Salar Jang I, the future minister, began his public life in 1847, at the age of nineteen.3 He was “talukdar of Khaman, a district in Telingana”, and he mastered every detail of the office in about eight months.3

His secretary Syed Hossain Bilgrami wrote a memoir of him (1883).4 It says only that his uncle, the minister Siraj-ul-Mulk, made him talukdar (district officer) of “some districts in Telingana”.4 An Englishman, Mr Dighton, had administered these districts before him.4
