Panugallu inscription of Gokarna Choda
A short Telugu inscription at Panugallu near Nalgonda. In it the Mahamandalesvara Kanduri Gokarna Choda grants the lordships of two villages, with full rights, to a minister's son-in-law and his son. The editor dated it to March 1122.
What it is
This short Telugu inscription at Panugallu is No. 32 in Part II of P. Sreenivasachar’s Corpus of Inscriptions in the Telingana Districts (1940).1 It is printed there with a translation and a plate.1 It records that the mahamandalesvara (great provincial lord) Kanduri Gokarna Choda-maharaja washed the feet of Gavaliya Bhimana-peggada, son-in-law of Gamana-peggada.12 He did this on the occasion of a solar eclipse.12
Gokarna gave Bhimana the lordship of Maduvulu with its eight kinds of enjoyment.12 He then washed the feet of Bhimana’s son Doddaya-bhatlu and gave him the lordship of Addaluru in the same way.12 The usual curse verses follow.12
Date
The record dates itself in Chalukya-Vikrama year 1043, the year Subhakrt, on the new-moon day of Phalguna, a Friday, at a solar eclipse.1 In his appendix of dates the editor rejected the era and took the figure as a Saka year, 1043.34 He found that the details then work out for Friday, 10 March 1122.34 He treated the cyclic year as a mistake.34 The appendix prints the entry under the heading of the next inscription, No. 33, but its date details are those of this record.3
The chief
Gokarna was one of the three sons of Mailamba named in her Panugallu inscription of 1124.5 See the Panugallu inscription of Mailamba. Records in Part III of the Corpus also name him. A Telugu record at Tummedu, near Achampet, is dated in Chalukya-Vikrama year 40.6 It gives a lamp to the god Ramesvara for the prosperity of the mahamandalesvara Kanduri Gokarna-maharaja.6 At Mamillapalli an officer of Kanduri Gokarna Chodadeva, lord of Kodur, gave land to the god Narasimha with his master’s permission.7
P. V. Parabrahma Sastry made Gokarna the lord of the Panugallu district under the Chalukya prince Kumara Tailapa. He wrote that Gokarna stayed loyal to the Chalukya king Somesvara III.89 In his account, Gokarna was killed by his brother Bhima about 1128.89 See the Kandur Chodas and Bhima Choda III.
