The Osmania General Hospital was built in Hyderabad in the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan. He was the last ruling Nizam of the Asaf Jahi line. The administration report of the Nizam’s government for 1924–25 lists the completion of the hospital among the important events of the year.1 It names it together with the Himayat Sagar reservoir and gives its cost as 20.57 lakhs.1

The report’s account of public works gives the exact figure: “The Osmania General Hospital was completed during the year at a cost of Rs. 20,56,535 against the estimate of Rs. 21,22,500.”2 See Hyderabad.

The hospital in use

K. Krishnaswamy Mudiraj’s Pictorial Hyderabad (1929) describes it as “the Osmania General Hospital, one of the best equipped in India”.34 He prints photographs of a surgical ward.34 He also prints a photograph of the superintendent, Professor R. N. Coorlawala, with the medical and nursing staff.34

The administration report for 1932–33 records that the Nizam opened the hospital’s X-ray department that year.5 It says that “all facilities for treatment of different diseases were available at the Osmania General Hospital”.67 Four assistant surgeons and nine sub-assistant surgeons of the medical department were sent there for post-graduate training.67
