Kandukur

Town formerly in the Nellore district, now in Prakasam. C. R. Krishnamacharlu took it to be the Kandukura of the Pallava Uruvupalli grant. The grant gave land to a temple of Vishnuhara there, which he thought was one of the early temples of Kandukur. He also thought the southern part of the Kandukur taluk lay in the ancient Mundarashtra.

The Uruvupalli grant was issued by the Pallava crown prince Vishnugopa.1 In J. F. Fleet’s translation, it gave two hundred nivartanas (a land measure) in the village of Uruvupalli as “a possession of the gods at Kandukura”.1 Its boundaries mention the village of Kendukura and the road to Kandukura.1

C. R. Krishnamacharlu corrected Fleet’s reading of the passage.2 In his reading, the land went as temple land to a temple of Vishnuhara built by a general.2 He thought this was one of the early temples of Kandukur.2

Mundarashtra

Krishnamacharlu identified the Mundarashtra of the Uruvupalli, Pikira and Vilavatti grants with the Munda-nadu of later Nellore inscriptions.3 The villages he could trace pointed to the Kovur taluk.3 But he thought the southern part of the Kandukur taluk also lay in this district.3

D. C. Sircar placed the village granted in the Vunna Guravayapalem plates of Paramesvaravarman I in the Podili–Kandukur region.4 He put it on the river Musi, which runs between the Kandukur and Ongole taluks.4
